“We are not trying to make education easy for our children. We are trying to make it worthy: worthy of their attention, worthy of their effort, and worthy of the precious years we've been given to form them. So perhaps the picture of scholé isn't quite the one I imagined all those years ago. It isn't necessarily clean children on a sofa with Bach playing and homemade bread baking in the oven.

Sometimes scholé does look like that. And sometimes it looks like a sixth grader staring at a difficult math problem, taking a deep breath, sharpening his pencil, and trying again. Both can be restful learning. Because restful doesn't mean easy. It means we have made room to attend carefully to the things that are worth doing, and to learn to do them well.”
